Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB)
Founded in 1928, CMMB is a Catholic leader in international
healthcare, providing quality healthcare programs and services,
without discrimination, to people in need throughout the developing
world. CMMB has undertaken groundbreaking programs to prevent
mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
I serve part-time as the Special Assistant
to the President of CMMB.

Nativity Mission Center
Nativity Mission Center was founded in 1948 to provide education
services to low income youth on Manhattan’s Lower East
Side and today operates a middle school serving 55 boys in
grades 6-8. All Nativity students are from low-income families
(i.e. qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches under
the National School Lunch Program). Remarkably, 90% of its
graduates finish high school, and nearly half obtain four-year
college degrees, very significantly higher than national
statistics for students of equivalent socio-economic backgrounds.
I serve on the Board of Directors for Nativity
Mission Center.

I was blessed as a child with a wonderful education and excellent
healthcare. Unfortunately, most of the world’s children
enjoy no such blessing, a sad reality I’ve seen first
hand in India, Zambia, Central America, and elsewhere in the
developing world. For this reason, I established the Tomorrow’s
Leaders Fund and am donating to it at least 20% of the royalties
from this edition of Heroic Leadership.
The Tomorrow’s
Leaders Fund supports projects providing basic education
and healthcare to impoverished children and their families.
Most but not all grantee organizations will be in developing
nations; in many cases the recipient organizations will
be known to me personally. Recipient projects will often
be sponsored by Catholic Church related organizations,
but grants will only be awarded for projects that provide
services on a non-discriminatory basis to individuals of
all faiths.
I would be honored
to have you join me in the vital work of helping poor children
become tomorrow’s
healthy, well educated leaders.
Fund Administration:
The Fund is administered by the National Catholic Community
Foundation (NCCF). I engaged NCCF for this purpose because,
1) it is a tax-exempt organization qualified to accept tax-deductible
donations and will provide all donors proper acknowledgement
of tax-exemption for their records; 2) Its Board of Trustees
will independently review any and all grants recommended by
me to ensure that your donations will be used only in accordance
with the purposes outlined above; 3) NCCF provides professional
administration at the most reasonable cost (approximately
1% of assets) that I could find; your donations will not be
diverted into overhead, but be directed to the children and
families who need our support.
A Typical Beneficiary:
I had the privilege of visiting Our Lady of Graces hospital
and informal education center in Sardhana, India a few months
ago. The sisters serve a poor, semi-urban community comprised
mostly of Muslim families. Our grant will purchase school
supplies for an informal education center that provides basic
literacy and math skills to approximately 200 young girls,
most of whom would otherwise receive no primary education.
The grant also allowed Sr/Dr. Liza to equip the hospital with
much needed equipment.
